Emergency Crews Respond to Amarillo Grass Fires

Emergency crews in Amarillo spent Friday afternoon responding to grass fires in the area of Hastings Street.

According to information from the Amarillo Police Department and the Amarillo Fire Department, crews were on scene at grass fires in Amarillo throughout the afternoon of Friday, December 8th. Two separate fires were reported as ongoing in Amarillo, both in the northern parts of the city limits.

There were also eports of the fires threatening structures and the Amarillo Independent School District released orders on Friday afternoon evacuating the Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning, Carver Elementary Academy and the Carver Early Childhood Academy. Students at Carver Academy were bused to Austin Middle School, students at Carver Early Childhood Academy were bused to the North Heights Alternative School and students at AACAL were to Houston Middle School. Parents should make plans to pick up the children at whichever campus they have been bused to.

In total, the fires burned over 400 acres of property in the north part of the city.

At 4:17pm, the Potter County Sheriff's Office called the fire 100 percent contained in Amarillo.
