Voters are hitting the polls in large numbers for the 2017 Amarillo and Canyon City elections.
According to numbers from Potter County, 1,319 voters have cast ballots either by mail or in person during early voting. In Randall County, 2221 voters have cast ballots. These voting numbers show more early voting interest than in the elections of previous years.
In 2015, voters cast fewer ballots during the beginning days of early voting than in this year's race. Potter County has the one exception, with yesterday's 392 ballots cast falling short of the number cast on the second day of early voting in 2015.
The early voting numbers for 2017's second day are much higher than early voting in 2013, when Mayor Paul Harpole faced one challenger and a crowded field sought seats on the Amarillo College Board of Regents. There was also an AISD bond on the ballot that year.
