A second challenger hoping to face Republican Governor Greg Abbott has emerged from the Democratic Party.
Tom Wakely, who runs a San Antonio hospice, announced his candidacy for governor on Facebook. Wakely previously was the Democratic Party's nominee for United States Congress in Texas' District 21 in 2016. Wakely lost his congressional bid to incumbent Congressman Lamar Smith, 57 percent to 36 percent.
Wakely has already stated on Facebook that issues he will be discussing include income inequality and increasing Texas' minimum wage to $15 per hour.
Wakely joins Jeffrey Payne, a Dallas bar owner, as a Democratic candidate for governor.
Interested candidates have until December to file for a place on the ballot.
