Senate Candidates Spar Over Conservatism

The three Republican contenders running for the District 31 Texas Senate race sparred over their conservative credentials during last night's Amarillo Tea Party forum.

Senator Kel Seliger and former Midland mayor Mike Canon drew battle lines over their conservative credentials during the forum. Meanwhile, Leal, who was unable to attend, sent a representative to the forum who attacked Seliger's credentials on the issues.

"He's consistently been ranked the most liberal Republican senator in Texas," Leal's representative said.

Seliger fired back by saying that while he is not the most conservative senator in Texas, that does not mean that he is not a conservative.

"They've ranked me the least conservative Republican senator in Texas, not the most liberal," Seliger said. "That means all the Republicans are still conservative."

Leal, Seliger and Canon are running for the Republican nomination for the 31st District's senate seat in the March 6th primary. The winner of the nomination will face a Libertarian challenger in November.
