The race for Texas Agriculture Commissioner is sporting competitive funding during the most recent campaign reporting cycle.
According to reports filed with the Texas Ethics Commission, Commissioner Sid Miller has a lower cash-on-hand total than one of his primary rivals in 2018. Miller reported $401,953.57 on hand at the end of 2017, while his opponent, former lobbyist Trey J. Blocker, reported $487,363.48 on hand.
While Miller has less cash on hand than Blocker, he outraised Blocker during the most recent reporting period. Miller reported raising $106,646.00, versus Blocker's $49,950.00 raised. Blocker was powered to a higher on-hand total, however, by a reported $600,000 in loans. As of the most recent reporting period, Miller reported having $300,000 in loans.
The third Republican running for the office, Jimmie Ray Hogan, did not file a finance report.
Kim Olson, the sole Democratic candidate in the race, reported raising $62,705.20 during the most recent period with a little over $55,000 on hand at the end of the reporting cycle. As of January, Olson's campaign is debt free.
Voters will decide the Republican primary on March 6th. The winner of the Republican Party's nomination will face Olson in November.
