Two top staff members have resigned from their positions at newspapers in the Texas Panhandle.
On Tuesday, Amarillo Globe-News publisher Les Simpson and Lubbock Avalanche-Journal publisher Brandon Hughes both announced their resignations. Both publishers resigned shortly after the publications were purchased by GateHouse Media, a New York-based lifestyle conglomerate, in 2017.
GateHouse Media regional vice president Matt Guthrie was quoted in both newspapers as saying that the company was disappointed to see the departure of Hughes and Simpson.
“We are sad to see both Les and Brandon go,” Guthrie said. “The service they gave to their papers and communities themselves will be their legacy.”
GateHouse Media officials say that a single regional publisher will soon be brought in to oversee operations at both newspapers. The replacement is expected to be named sometime in the coming days after Hughes and Simpson leave the newspapers on Friday.
