Records: City Attorney Opinion Banning Handguns Doesn't Exist

A public information request filed with the City of Amarillo revealed that an order banning handguns at the Amarillo Municipal Court building does not exist.

In a records request filed in late 2017, the Amarillo Pioneer requested a copy of an opinion that is cited at the Amarillo Municipal Court Building. The sign at the door of the building prohibits handguns in the building and says that the decision is due to a city attorney's opinion.

"This legal opinion is in response to a City of Amarillo staff query. It is rendered by the city's attorney solely for the purpose of determining the City's legal rights, duties, etc," the sign reads at the Amarillo Municipal Court.

In response to a request for a copy of the opinion, City officials told the Amarillo Pioneer that no such legal opinion exists.

"There are no records responsive to your request," the City of Amarillo responded back to the request.

The sign has been posted at the Amarillo Municipal Court since at least 2016.
