Seliger 'Likes' Tweet Saying Trump Has 'Dangerous Unfitness' for Presidency

Senator Kel Seliger (R-Amarillo) "liked" a post on Twitter last week describing President Donald Trump's "dangerous unfitness" to hold the presidency.

The tweet, which was liked by Senator Seliger, was posted to Twitter on Thursday by former CIA agent Evan McMullin. McMullin, who ran for president in 2016 as an independent, reacted to the new book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House by Michael Wolff.

"What surprises me most about Wolff’s book is not its salacious revelations, but rather the reactions of so many professional observers who are only now willing to acknowledge Trump’s dangerous unfitness," McMullin wrote on Twitter.

The tweet has been "liked" over 21,000 times and retweeted over 5,000 times. Among those likes is Senator Seliger's account.

Senator Seliger's campaign replied to the Amarillo Pioneer's request for comment by citing that the Senator accidentially pressed the "like" button on the tweet and still supports President Trump. Campaign consultant Craig Murphy also mentioned to the Pioneer that Seliger endorsed Trump in 2016.

"It's so easy to bump that little 'like' button," Murphy said. "They don't give you an 'are you sure.'"

McMullin is a frequent critic of Trump, posting several hundred tweets criticizing the President. According to the "likes" page on Senator Seliger's Twitter, Seliger has primarily liked posts praising his legislative agenda and campaign updates. This is only the second tweet regarding a major politician that Seliger's account has "liked." The other tweet was posted by Seliger's account criticizing Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Victor Leal, an Amarillo restaurateur who is challenging Seliger in 2018, said that the tweet matches up with Seliger's record.

"It doesn't surprise me that Seliger is against a conservative agenda," Leal said. "He's been like that since he was elected. The tweet matches up with his record as the most liberal senator in Texas."

On the topic of Trump's fitness to hold the office, Leal said that he believes that Trump is "incredibly fit" to hold the office of President of the United States.

"I think he is incredibly fit and his agenda is producing great results," Leal said. "The economy is producing employment, the stock market is growing, oil and gas is doing fantastic and we have a Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, which is great. Trump is doing exactly what he was elected to do."

Seliger is running for re-election in the 2018 Republican primary race against Leal and former Midland mayor Mike Canon. The winner of the nomination will face off with Libertarian Jack Westbrook in November.
