Conor McGregor will make his long-awaited UFC return this weekend at UFC 229 when he takes on Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Several local establishments are expected to show the fight, which has been billed as the “biggest event in UFC history.”
The fight has been long in the making, after an incident in April saw McGregor throw a steel dolly at a bus in Brooklyn that was carrying Nurmagomedov and other fighters. After the UFC stripped McGregor of his belt due to inactivity, Nurmagomedov defeated Al Iaquinta at UFC 223 to win the vacant title. The undefeated Nurmagomedov will now face McGregor for his first UFC appearance in nearly two years. McGregor last fought in November of 2016, defeating Eddie Alvarez by knockout. The UFC star then made a crossover to boxing for a megafight with Floyd Mayweather. McGregor was defeated by knockout in Round 10 of his bout with Mayweather.
Thus far, bars.ufc.com has two local venues confirmed for the fight. Hooters (8101 I-40 West) and Fast Eddies Billiards (1619 S Kentucky St. Ste. B220) have both been confirmed on the website to show the fight. Bodegas is also advertising that it will be showing the fight, with Nick’s Fight Club members receiving free admission. Additionally, both Buffalo Wild Wings locations in Amarillo are expected to show the fight. The newly opened Cinergy Entertainment complex in Amarillo is also advertising that it will be showing the fight.
More venues are expected to be added as the “biggest fight in UFC history” approaches. The main card fights will begin at 9PM on Saturday, October 6th.
