A former gubernatorial candidate and musician has thrown his weight behind the Libertarian nominee for governor.
Kinky Friedman has endorsed Mark Tippetts for governor of Texas, the Tippetts campaign announced on Thursday. The endorsement from the one-time independent candidate for governor highlighted his disappoint with the two major party nominees in the race, and why he feels Tippetts is the best candidate on the ballot.
"I ran for governor in 2006 to give Texans a choice," Friedman said in the statement. "Not much has changed. They still try to screw Libertarians and independents, while, ironically, most Texans are Libertarians and independents."
"I have looked at the choices and Mark Tippetts is the best choice for Texas governor," Friedman went on to say. "I endorse him."
Friedman, the man behind several classic comedic songs, was a candidate for governor in 2006. In that race, Friedman ran as an independent and netted about 14 percent of the vote. Friedman also made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for agriculture commissioner in 2014, losing to Jim Hogan in the primary runoff.
Mark Tippetts, an international business consultant and former Lago Vista city councilman, is the Libertarian nominee for governor. Tippetts will face Republican Greg Abbott and Democrat Lupe Valdez in the general election.
Election day is November 6th.
