One of the three candidates who ran for Texas’ top land job in 2018 is gearing up for a brand new campaign.
Matt Pina has declared his intention to challenge San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg in the 2019 San Antonio elections. Pina, a resident of San Antonio and advocate for the historic Alamo, was the Libertarian nominee for Texas Land Commissioner in 2018, pulling in about 258,000 votes, or 3 percent, against Republican and Democratic opponents.
Nirenberg was first elected in 2017, unseating incumbent Mayor Ivy R. Taylor. It is unclear whether Nirenberg will run for a second term.
The election will be held in May.
