'Police' Scammers Targeting Amarillo

A group of scam callers have begun targeting the Amarillo area.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officials have received reports that a scam caller has begun calling residents in Amarillo, claiming to be with the APD. The scammers are claiming to be Detective Samuel Hammett or Sergeant Sellers and are calling from the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center phone number (378-3038), claiming that the recipient of the call has warrants. The scammer then asks the person receiving the call to pay their "warrants" with a Green Dot Card or an iTunes card.

If you receive such a call, you are asked to remember that these calls are not real, as APD will never call and advise residents to pay warrants over the phone or with gift cards. If you have fallen victim to the scam, you are asked to make a report on police.amarillo.gov. If you have not fallen victim to the scam, you are asked to refrain from calling APD to report it.
