Canyon Considering Speed Limit Reduction on Country Club Drive

A speed limit reduction could be coming to two streets in Canyon.

On Monday, the Canyon City Commission will consider voting to approve a speed limit reduction for two streets in Canyon. The first reduction would take place on Valley View Drive, while the second would take place on a portion of Country Club Drive starting at Village and ending a Griffin, in front of the entrance to the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course. If approved, both reductions would see limits move from 30mph to 25mph.

Commissioners will also consider prohibiting engine brakes in Canyon. In a memo, Canyon Police Chief Dale Davis said that the engine brakes, also known as "Jake Brakes," create a loud roar that is "disturbing" to residents of Canyon. Davis also said that there is no reasonable reason for the brakes to be used in Canyon.

"The primary use for an engine brakes, is to assist in slowing large trucks travelling on roadways having a significant declining grade," Davis wrote in his memo to Commissioners. "These locations, inside the city limits of Canyon, are limited to non-existent. There is no valid reason to utilize engine brakes in Canyon."

The Canyon City Commission will meet on Monday, April 2nd in the Commission Chambers of Canyon City Hall (301 16th Street, Canyon). The meeting begins at 5:30pm.
