"The Amarillo Police Department’s Captain Elizabeth Brown just recently returned from the 271st session of the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Virginia. She was the first female officer from APD to be a part of this program.
Two hundred and twenty three law enforcement officers graduated from the 271stsession of the FBI Academy on March 16th. The academy consisted of men and women from 48 states and included members of law enforcement agencies from the District of Columbia, 18 international countries, five military organizations and five federal civilian organizations.
Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the FBI Academy, officers ten weeks of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training for selected officers having proven records as professionals within their agencies. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.
Training for the program is provided by the FBI Academy instructional staff, Special Agents, and other staff members holding advanced degrees, many of whom are recognized internationally in their fields of expertise.
Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia due to the accreditation by the university of the many courses offered. A total of 50,808 graduates now represent the alumni of the FBI National Academy since it began in 1935.
Captain Brown marks the 15th APD officer to attend the FBI Academy. She was the first of any APD officer to conquer all of the fitness challenges while in attendance. The fitness challenges included a 6 mile endurance challenge, 34 mile swimming challenge, 34 mile rowing challenge and a 271 mile bike challenge.
Captain Brown was also voted the coordinator of “Texas Night” for the entire academy. She received meat and monetary donations from Edes Custom Meats and the local CLEAT representatives (Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas). Thanks to these donations, she and 18 Texas attendees brought true Texas hospitality to over 250 students and instructors including her German roommate Tina Ladwig.
During this 10 week academy Captain Brown was away from her family and her position at the department. Captain Brown stated that she is thankful to have attended this world class training in order to better herself and the department, in service to the City of Amarillo."
