Abbott Announces School Safety Compliance, Grant Award

Governor Greg Abbott announced on Thursday that all Texas school districts and public junior college districts are in compliance with state safety regulations following a safety audit.

On Thursday, Abbott made the announcement, stating that all public schools and junior colleges were in compliance with state safety regulations. Abbott also penned letters to several state governing bodies, highlighting possible measures to increase school safety.

"As the country still mourns the tragedy that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Texas is taking action to ensure the safety of students in our public schools," Abbott said in a statement. "Every student deserves a safe and secure environment to learn and grow, and I am pleased that our school districts and public junior college districts are meeting these important standards. I thank Commissioners Morath and Paredes, as well as the Texas School Safety Center, for this collaborative effort to boost school safety in Texas, and I look forward to continuing our work on this important issue."

Abbott also said that an $853,000 grant was awarded to the Texas School Safety Center to assist in strengthening school safety in Texas. The grant will be used to work on issues such as school violence, substance abuse, and bullying. The grant will also ensure that the School Safety Center is operational through mid-2019.
