Voting has begun in Lubbock and voters will decide several key elections on the May 5th municipal election day.
First, Lubbock voters will be voting in the race for mayor. Mayor Dan Pope, the incumbent and former trustee of the Lubbock Independent School District, is seeking re-election. Pope is being challenged by Texas Tech University communications student Johnathan Cothran. Stephen Sanders, a write-in candidate who is campaigning on the platform of making Lubbock a move "progressive" city, will also be appearing on the ballot.
In the elections for city council, Councilman Juan Chadis will face a challenge from Patrick Kelly. Chadis is the incumbent Councilman for District 1. No other incumbent councilmember who is up for re-election drew a challenger.
And, in potentially the biggest ballot issue this year for Lubbock, voters will decide the fate of the historic Lubbock Municipal Coliseum and Auditorium. The City of Lubbock is asking voters to agree to permanently abandon the properties. If voters approve the issue to abandon the properties, the property ownership will revert to Texas Tech and university officials have expressed interest in tearing down the venues to make way for a student athlete housing facility.
Election day is May 5th.
