The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has temporarily halted the scheduled execution of a 93-year-old man.
According to the Texas Tribune, this week, the Court temporarily halted the June 21st execution of Clifton Williams after his attorneys filed a petition stating that Williams is intellectually disabled, and thus, ineligible for the death penalty. The Court halted the execution and sent the case back to a Smith County trial court, according to NBC DFW.
Williams is accused of killing a 93-year-old woman, before fleeing with her car and purse.
This is the first stay of execution granted this year by the Texas court. Seven stays of execution were granted in 2017.
