One state senator has tendered their resignation to Governor Greg Abbott, due to an ongoing campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.
On Tuesday, Senator Sylvia Garcia (D-Houston) announced that she has informed Governor Abbott of her intention to resign from the Texas Senate. The Democratic legislator and former municipal judge resigned due to her bid for the U.S. House of Representatives. Garcia is the Democratic nominee for a seat being vacated by Democratic incumbent Gene Green, who has held the seat since 1993.
In her letter to Abbott, Garcia asked the Governor to call a special election in November to fill the seat. Garcia's term has not yet expired, however, the Democrat stated in the letter that she would like to see the seat filled by voters before the beginning of the January legislative session in Texas.
