Davis Launches Central Texas Congressional Bid

Conservative U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Austin) has picked up a well-known challenger for his 2020 re-election campaign.

Former gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis announced this week that she will challenge Roy for his seat in 2020. Davis, a former State Senator and former Fort Worth City Councilwoman, launched her bid with a biographical video online, becoming the first Democratic candidate to announce a challenge to the freshman Republican incumbent.

"I'm running for Congress because people's voices are still being silenced," Davis said in her announcement, according to the Texas Tribune. "I'm running for our children and grandchildren, so they can live and love and fight for change themselves."

Davis is best known for her filibuster of a 2013 anti-abortion bill, eventually parlaying her notoriety into a run to replace Gov. Rick Perry in 2014. Davis beat Ray Madrigal in that year’s Democratic primary, but went on to lose to Republican Greg Abbott in the November election, 59 percent to 39 percent.

Roy, meanwhile, is a recently-elected conservative congressman, who beat out Joseph Kopser and Libertarian Lee Santos to replace U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith in 2018.
