Amarillo Shelter Intake Up, Reclaims Down in June

Numbers released this week by Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare show intake was up at the shelter, while overall reclaims were down during the month of June.

According to AM&W, officials reported taking in 562 stray dogs and 310 stray cats during the month of June, 2018. These numbers are up from May's numbers, which showed dog intake at 505 and stray cat intake at 271. However, while these numbers were up, adoption and reclaim numbers were down. 61 animals were reclaimed during the month of June, while 221 were adopted through the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society.

Overall, euthanasia rates were down during the month of June. Officials say 291 animals were euthanized in June, down from 364 animals in May. However, June still accounted for the second highest totals of animals euthanized during a single month at the shelter this year.
