Surrenders, Euthanasia Numbers Rising at Animal Management & Welfare

Intake and euthanasia rates continue to rise at Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare.

According to new numbers released this week by the department, officials say that May's total intake at the shelter saw a sharp increase over the numbers for the previous month. Officials report that 1,142 animals were taken in by the shelter in May, up from 984 in April. Of that nearly 1,200 animal intake, 297 animals were surrendered. Additionally, 364 animals were euthanized at the shelter in May, up exactly 150 animals from the previous month.

However, while intake and euthanasia numbers are rising, the Humane Society reports more adoptions for the month of May. Officials say 547 animals left through the Humane Society in May, up from 451 in April. So far, more animals have left through the Humane Society in May than in any other month this year. The Humane Society operates as a separate entity from Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare. While AM&W is responsible for much of the intake at the shelter, the Humane Society is responsible solely for adoptions and fosters.

The new numbers come just weeks after it was released that Animal Management & Welfare euthanized a mother dog that was in labor. The story drew national attention and officials have recently been in the process of responding to issues related to the incident.
