The Polk Street Cruise may be a thing of the past beginning next year.
According to a post to Facebook, the Amarillo Area Corvette Club has announced that its annual Don W. Houghton Memorial Polk Street Cruise will be held this year on August 4th. However, while the event will be held this year, the organization says that 2018 could mark the final year of the longtime summer staple, as costs imposed by the City of Amarillo have created new concerns for the club.
"Unfortunately, due to exorbitant costs that will be imposed by the City next year, this may be the last year we can host this family friendly free event," the Corvette Club announced. "While the Amarillo Area Corvette Club is a nonprofit organization, which raises money through our car show and other events, this money is earmarked for two local charities. We hope the City will recognize the nostalgic cruise on Polk as a community event, and will work with us again next year, keeping the costs to a minimum so all can continue to enjoy cruising on Polk."
Last month, city manager Jared Miller announced that the City of Amarillo has begun seeking to recoup security costs related to a number of events. Miller says organizations were notified last year of the new costs. Due to the costs, the Tri-State Fair temporarily cancelled its longtime parade, before Fiesta Foods of Amarillo stepped in to donate the money to save the historic event.
