Speed, Narcotics Believed to be Factors in Major Collision

Several people were sent to a local hospital on Thursday following a major collision at a Crockett Street intersection.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers were dispatched to a major vehicle collision on Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Interstate 40 and Crockett. Three vehicles were involved, including one which was already followed by an officer on Interstate 40. This vehicle, a 2008 silver Toyota Tacoma, was eastbound on the I-40 South Frontal road at a high rate of speed. It appears that the Toyota Tacoma disregarded a stop sign and struck a 2016 Toyota Highlander, driven by a 76-year-old man and a 2012 Toyota Tundra, driven by a 35-year-old man.

The Tundra was knocked sideways and rolled on the grass median, striking a tree. The driver of the Tundra was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. A child passenger was also taken to a local hospital, with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Highlander was uninjured. The driver of the Tacoma was also sent to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It is believed by officers that the Tacoma had been reported stolen earlier in the day from a motel on Amarillo Boulevard. Speed and narcotics are believed to be factors in the collision.

This incident is under investigation by APD.
