Civic Center to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

The Amarillo Civic Center Complex will celebrate its 50th anniversary later this month.

According to information from the Civic Center, officials are planning major festivities to commemorate the historic venue on August 31st. A ribbon cutting will be held, which will be followed by ice skating and facility tours. Concessions will also be sold using "throwback" prices from the original opening of the venue.

First opened in 1964, the Amarillo Civic Center has been a staple of downtown Amarillo. The first concert held at the venue was on September 2, 1964 and featured the Oak Ridge Boys and other gospel quartets. The first concert held in the coliseum of the venue was held the following day and featured country star Glen Campbell.

The festivities will begin at 4pm and will run until 7pm on August 31st.
