The Amarillo Police Department has announced the creation of the new Intercept Program.
On Thursday, the Amarillo Police Department and the Texas Panhandle Centers announced the creation of the Intercept Program. The program has been created to allow mental health professionals to ride alongside the APD Crisis Intervention Team. Two Intercept teams will be dispatched, hitting the streets later this month. The program is aimed to assist individuals with mental illnesses by providing resources and treatment available from the community. Authorities also hope that the program will prevent unnecessary incarceration and hospitalization of those suffering from mental illness.
Other partners in the program include: Heal the City, Family Support Services, Dailey Recovery Service and Coalition of Health Services, Inc. The program is funded by grants from the State of Texas.
