“Students and faculty in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at West Texas A&M University are gearing up for the Sept. 17 Constitution Day with voter registration and a special lecture presentation.
Those who aren’t registered to vote can visit a voter registration table from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17 in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center (JBK). Voter registration is required to vote in the state of Texas. Those registering must be a United States citizen and a resident of the county where registering to vote.
Dr. George C. Edwards III, distinguished professor of political science and Jordan Chair in Presidential Studies at Texas A&M University, will focus on Constitution Day with a 12:15 p.m. presentation on “Is the Electoral College Bad for America?” in the JBK’s Legacy Hall.
Edwards is a leading scholar on the presidency and has numerous books on American politics to his credit. His presentations have been heard on university campuses across the United States and to various groups here and abroad as well as national and international conferences.
Constitution Day, formerly known as Citizenship Day, was established in 2004 with the passage of an amendment to the Omnibus spending bill. It commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. On this designated day, all publicly funded educational institutions and federal agencies are required to provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution.
