State Representative Four Price (R-Amarillo) is officially in the race for Texas Speaker of the House.
On Thursday, Price officially filed his paperwork with the Texas Ethics Commission to run for Texas Speaker of the House. Price, who currently chairs the Select, Opioids and Substance Abuse and Public Health Committees, is the seventh candidate to join the race to replace the retiring Joe Straus.
Price's entry into the race has long been expected, as Price has been one of the key supporters of Speaker Straus since first being elected to the House in 2010.
Benefiting from heavy support by Amarillo Matters, Price dispatched his only challenger in March, Republican Drew Brassfield, clearing the path for an uncontested November re-election. After his victory over Brassfield, attention turned to Price, as many pundits guessed that Price would likely join the race.
Walter "Four" Price, IV is the seventh candidate to file for the seat, with Democrat Eric Johnson and Republicans Travis Clardy, Drew Darby, Phil King, Tan Parker and John Zerwas already in the race. More candidates may also join the race.
When he's not serving in Austin, Price serves as the vice president and trust officer of Amarillo National Bank. Price is also a licensed attorney in Texas, holding a law degree from St. Mary's University. Price was first elected in 2010, defeating Republican Victor Leal in the primary and Democrat Abel Bosquez in the general election. Price has since won re-election in every contest for which he has run. Price's campaign treasurer is Thomas Kevin Nelson, husband of Amarillo mayor Ginger Nelson.
