Four Price likely won’t be the next speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.
This weekend, the Texas Tribune reported Price, an Amarillo Republican, has dropped his bid to replace the retiring Speaker Joe Straus next year. An Amarillo attorney and banker, immediately became a speculative candidate after winning his March 6th primary against Fritch city manager Drew Brassfield, and filed to run for the job in September. Price has not officially terminated his campaign, according to filings with the Texas Ethics Commission.
It was also reported Price endorsed Dennis Bonnen for the job. Bonnen, a Republican from Angleton, has become the frontrunner for the job in recent days, as a number of Republican candidates, and one Democrat, have dropped out to support the Representative. The withdrawal of candidates from the race has left just two candidates still running, Bonnen and Travis P. Clardy (R-Nacogdoches). Drew Darby (R-San Angelo) has also pulled out of the race, according to San Angelo LIVE!
A new speaker is expected to be selected some time around the start of the upcoming legislative session.
