Are you wanting to run for office next year? It’s time to file.

Beginning on Wednesday, January 16th, applications will start being accepted by local subdivisions and governing bodies for the May 4th local elections in the Amarillo area. Seats on the Amarillo City Council and the Canyon City Commission will be up for grabs in the May election. Mayoral seats in Amarillo and Canyon will also be up for re-election, with those seats currently being occupied by Ginger Nelson and Gary Hinders, respectively.

In addition to the City Council seats, races for various school district boards of trustees will also be held. School districts holding elections will include Amarillo Independent School District, Canyon ISD, River Road ISD, Bushland ISD, and Highland Park ISD. Seats available in these races will vary, with most having multiple seats up for grabs.

The cutoff date to submit an application for a place on the ballot is Friday, February 15th at 5pm. The election will then be held on May 4th, with a possible runoff held around June, if necessary.
