Julián Castro is running for president of the United States in 2020.
This weekend, Castro, a former mayor of San Antonio and former Obama-era Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, launched his bid for president in San Antonio. Castro’s announcement featured themes such as a universal pre-k proposal and more.
"I'm running for president because it's time for new leadership, it's time for new energy and it’s time for a new commitment to make sure that the opportunities that I had are available to every American," Castro said at the announcement.
Castro’s announcement makes him the fifth major candidate to jump into the Democratic Party’s race for the White House. Former Maryland Representative John Delaney, businessman Andrew Yang, former congressional candidate Richard Ojeda and Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard are also running.
