Beto O’Rourke is running for president.
On Thursday, O’Rourke, a former U.S. Congressman and 2018 Democratic nominee for Texas’ U.S. Senate seat, announced his plans to seek the White House in 2020. The announcement came in the form of an email to supporters and a three minute video posted to his social media sites.
“Amy and I have decided that running to serve America as president is the best way for us to do our part, understanding that we have an historic opportunity to join with millions of our fellow Americans at a time like no other,” O’Rourke said in the letter to supporters.
The El Paso Democrat’s entry into the race comes at a time when several top tier Democrats have been vying to gain traction in the race. Many pundits have been awaiting O’Rourke’s entry into the race, along with former Vice President Joe Biden’s possible candidacy. O’Rourke, Biden, and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders have long been seen as top candidates for the nomination.
