City Council Filings Highlighted by Incumbents, Two Challengers

Filing began Wednesday for seats on the Amarillo City Council, with four incumbents and two challengers locking down their places on the ballot.

In filings made with the City of Amarillo on Wednesday, Mayor Ginger Nelson and incumbent City Councilmembers Eddy Sauer and Howard Smith filed to run for re-election. Councilwoman Freda Powell, who has declared she will run for re-election, was not listed on a report of filed candidates at press time. Councilwoman Elaine Hays also has not yet filed for re-election, although she has also not declared whether she intends to run for a second term.

While the incumbents filed, so did two challengers. Treva L. Harper filed to run for City Council, Place 2, which is currently held by Powell. Steven R. Rosas, Jr. also filed to run for the City Council, Place 4 seat, which is held by Smith.

A number of other rumored and declared challengers are expected to file paperwork in the coming days. Filing for seats on the Council ends on February 15th. Election day is May 4th.
