Jones to Seek Re-Election to Canyon Commission, Challenger Disqualified

The race for one spot on the Canyon City Commission had a bit of a shakeup on Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, Cody Jones, the incumbent, filed to run for re-election to his Place 2 spot on the Commission. Jones is a police officer in Randall County, who was elected to the Commission in 2017, ousting then-incumbent Joe Shehan.

However, while it was expected that two candidates would file for the position on Wednesday, the City of Canyon declared Jones’ opponent ineligible. Justin Miller, a 26-year-old businessman from Canyon, announced on Facebook this morning that when he tried to file his application, the City refused to accept it, saying he has an active voter registration in Amarillo.

At press time, it appears Jones is the only candidate running for Canyon City Commission, Place 2. Filing for the office ends on February 15th. Election day is May 4th.
