Former HUD Secretary Julian Castro is threatening to ditch his 2020 presidential bid if he does not raise $800,000 in the next eight days.
According to fundraising emails sent out by Castro’s campaign, the former San Antonio Mayor is saying he will have “no choice but to exit this race” if he does not raise $800,000 by the end of the month. The move comes as Castro is fighting to gain a coveted spot on the next Democratic debate stage. Castro has met the donor criteria for the debate, but is still falling short of the polling requirement to earn a spot on stage.
In Castro’s emails, he has been calling the decision a “tough and vulnerable announcement” and has taken aim at businessman Tom Steyer, who recently qualified for the next debate stage. In an email this week, Castro accused Steyer of pledging to spend $100 million to “bypass” Castro’s campaign in the debate qualification race.
