Karla K. Morton will speak at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7 in West Texas A&M University’s Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex Recital Hall. As all WT Distinguished Lecture Series presentations, this event is free and open to the public.
Described as “one of the more adventurous voices in American poetry,” Morton was the 2010 Texas Poet Laureate. She is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters and a celebrated poet, award-winning author, speaker and photographer.
“Karla K. Morton is more than a poet, she’s an inspiration. Morton is a ‘can’t miss’ poet, for she writes from the heart,” Dr. Eric Meljac, assistant professor of English, said.
Morton has won the Western Heritage Wrangler Award, Betsy Colquitt Award, Eric Hoffer Award, Indie Book Award, North Texas Book Festival Award and was a finalist for the Montaigne Medal and a nominee for the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and Pushcart Prize.
“For many years we have had many poets from many places in the U.S. on campus to give readings—Ohio, Florida, and Virginia among them,” Meljac said. “Finally, it was time to look at our shared home—Texas—and have one of Texas’s current most famous poets share her poetry with us.”
