U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) joined a bipartisan group of legislators on Tuesday in voting for sanctions against Turkey in relation to the country’s recent invasion of Northern Syria.
Thornberry joined the majority on Tuesday as the House voted 403-16 to pass the bill. Those voting against the bill included 15 Republicans and 1 Democrat.
According to the bill, House members voted to authorize the U.S. President to put into place visa- and asset-blocking sanctions on specific Turkish officials “connected to the invasion.” The bill also directed the President to place sanctions on the Turkish state-owned bank, Halk Bankasi, and to place sanctions on the Turkish government.
The bill was authored by New York Democrat Eliot Engel.
