Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful MJ Hegar picked up a big endorsement this week.
On Monday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee waded into the crowded Texas U.S. Senate race, endorsing Hegar for the Democratic Party’s nomination. Hegar, an Air Force veteran and former congressional candidate, is one of twelve Democrats hoping to challenge for Republican Senator John Cornyn’s seat in 2020.
Two of Hegar’s opponents for the nomination, Chris Bell and Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez, have criticized the DSCC for the endorsement, with both campaigns calling Hegar a “former Republican.” The reference appears to refer to Hegar’s participation in the 2016 Republican primary, where her campaign says she voted for former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, according to the Texas Tribune.
In addition to Hegar, Bell, and Tzintzun Ramirez, Michael Cooper, Amanda Edwards, Jack Foster, Annie Garcia, Victor Harris, Sema Hernandez, D.R. Hunter, Adrian Ocegueda, and Royce West are also running in the Democratic primary.
The Democratic primary election will be held on March 3, 2020.
