A religious liberty bill got the final approval from Governor Greg Abbott this week.
On Monday, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 1978 into law, which would prohibit governments from retaliating against an individual for their support or affiliation with a religious organization. The bill was authored by Senator Bryan Hughes and co-sponsored by a number of legislators, including Amarillo Republican John T. Smithee. However, the bill was opposed by Amarillo Senator Kel Seliger.
The bill gained traction after a Chick-Fil-A establishment was reportedly barred from operating in a municipal airport in San Antonio. The move ruffled feathers and ended up becoming an issue in San Antonio’s recent mayoral election.
According to the Governor’s Office, the bill will go into effect on September 1st.
