Former Texas U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke doubled down on his recent calls for gun control legislation during the third Democratic presidential debate in Houston on Thursday night, saying “hell yes” to the prospect of some gun buybacks.
During the debate, O’Rourke was asked by moderator David Muir if he supported “taking away [Americans’] guns,” to which O’Rourke replied he would support such a policy. Muir noted that some of the other Democratic contenders for president have proposed voluntary buybacks, but O’Rourke is the only candidate calling for Americans to “have to” participate in buybacks.
"Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47," O’Rourke said. "We're not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore."
O’Rourke was the only candidate to back such a policy during the debate.
