Civic Center Committee Announces Recommendations Ahead of Potential Bond Election

A committee assembled to study renovations to the Amarillo Civic Center is proposing a number of projects as the City Council considers ordering a May bond election.

This week, the five-member committee formed to study renovations of the venue recommended that the City of Amarillo proceed with several high-dollar projects aimed at updating the facility. Among the group’s recommendations were building new exhibit space, building a 10,000 seat arena, renovating the Santa Fe Depot, and creating a “central plaza” downtown. The recommendations were mostly in line with expectations for a potential $279 million bond election for the venue.

The group also said if the bond is proposed to voters, it recommends voters vote for the package.

City officials have been considering for several weeks a proposal to renovate the Civic Center Complex. Voters voted down a smaller Civic Center bond package in 2016, so it is unclear where the public’s support for such a bond election would stand in 2020.
