Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson made a statement on Thursday, informing the public that she has been diagnosed with a form of blood cancer.
In the statement, Nelson said her prognosis is good, but she plans to take some time off to continue her medical care.
“We are in the very early stages of the diagnosis, and I appreciate your understanding and your prayers as we continue to get answers,” Nelson said.
Nelson also said that she intends to continue her service as Mayor but has spoken to the City Council and City Manager about their leadership for the city during any absences.
Nelson has served as Mayor since 2017.
