Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson will seek a third term in May 2021.

On Tuesday, Nelson launched her campaign with a Facebook video, which also outlined her campaign issues for the upcoming election cycle. Nelson said based on the events of the past few years at City Hall, she decided to seek another term in her job.

“I think we’ve had a lot of progress in our city over the last few years and I think we have a lot of potential moving forward to grow our city and be even better,” Nelson said. “Because of that, I am announcing that I would like to seek another term as mayor.”

According to Nelson’s Facebook video, her priorities for this year’s election will include internet access, Animal Management & Welfare improvement, job creation, reducing crime, and street improvements.

As of this writing, Nelson has already drawn two challengers — self-employed candidate Jeffrey McElreath and paralegal Claudette Smith. Smith previously sought the mayor’s office in 2019 against Nelson, but came up short in that race.

Filing for spots on the ballot begins January 13. Election Day is May 1.
