We have asked candidates running for various offices to answer questions for our Voter Guide. While full responses are available here, we are offering you an excerpt in “Candidate Comparisons” ahead of the November 3, 2020 general election. Each response below came directly from the candidate’s questionnaire and is unedited.
Jane Bland, Republican (Incumbent)
Occupation: Justice, Texas Supreme Court, Place 6
Why are you the best candidate for voters to support for this position in 2020?
My 22 years of judicial experience equip me for the hard work and thoughtfulness needed to resolve the challenging cases that come before our state’s highest court. I am a board-certified lawyer and long-serving judge who knows the importance of every case to the parties involved. My experience is reflected in over 1,000 signed opinions and thousands more cases resolved.
Kathy Cheng, Democrat
Occupation: I am an attorney in private practice. I am also a mediator and arbitrator.
Why are you the best candidate for voters to support for this position in 2020?
The law is not always black or white, and there are gray areas. Citizens of different background, cognitive and cultural wise, lead to better questions raised, in-depth analyses, solutions, and processes. With my diverse lenses that I gained from diverse legal and life experience as a woman of color, I am the better candidate to interpret the laws of the State of Texas for all citizens, thus, leading to fair outcomes, thus restoring integrity back to the judiciary that is currently lacking on the Texas Supreme Court.
