Amarillo voters rejected a $275 million bond for downtown projects and a proposal to extend the terms of the Amarillo mayor and City Council on Tuesday night.
According to unofficial totals, voters rejected Propositions A and B on Tuesday, with voters voting against the Props at rates of 61% and 52%, respectively.
Proposition A would have authorized $275 million in debt issuances to fund the majority of a $319 million downtown spending package. Meanwhile, Proposition B would have approved extended terms for the Amarillo mayor and City Council, with City officials claiming they intended to stagger future municipal elections.
While Amarillo Propositions A and B went down, Proposition C passed on a 57-43% margin. That Proposition requires no fewer than 26 meetings of the City Council in a calendar year, which is a decrease from the current requirement of weekly City Council meetings. In theory, this should allow for half as many meetings of the City Council each year.
