Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson reacted to the overwhelming defeat of Amarillo Proposition A in a video posted to social media on Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, voters rejected Proposition A, which would have funded $275 million worth of spending in a planned $319 downtown spending package. Voters voted down Prop A with 62 percent rejecting the proposal.

In her video, Nelson said she had hoped the item would pass, but now plans to respect the defeat of the proposal.

“We are glad to respect the result was what it was,” Nelson said.

Nelson also said Proposition A was a “big reach,” but continued to call renovations to the Civic Center a “big need” in Amarillo.

“This is where democracy is so wonderful that we asked and the majority of you said, ‘now is not the right time,” Nelson said in the video. “It’s a big reach, and I know it’s a big reach, but it is a big need in our city.”

Last night marked the second time in four years that voters have declined to pass a bond that included the Amarillo Civic Center in some form. In 2016, voters also voted down a bond, which would have funded several renovation projects to the facade of the Civic Center and various facilities within the complex.
