Clayton Williams, 1990 Candidate for Texas Governor, Passes Away

Midland’s Clayton Williams has passed away at the age of 88.

The Midland Reporter-Telegram reported on Friday that Williams had passed away. Williams, an oilman and businessman, is well remembered for his community involvement in the Midland area and for his support of Texas A&M University.

He is perhaps best known for his 1990 campaign for governor, in which he ran as the Republican nominee opposite Democrat Ann Richards. Netting 1.8 million votes, or 47 percent of ballots cast, Williams lost to Richards, who is the last Democrat to be elected as Texas’ top executive.
