Abbott: Amarillo Has 'Turned the Corner' on Coronavirus

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a press conference on Wednesday at Amarillo City Hall that Amarillo appears to have “turned the corner” on the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a press conference featuring Abbott, Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson, several state legislators, and state officials, the Governor gave an update on the coronavirus pandemic and response efforts in Amarillo. During the event, Abbott said current testing results have been promising following a recent surge in coronavirus cases in Amarillo.

"You see extremely positive results that lead to the ability to say that Amarillo has turned the corner on its pathway to a positive, effective resolution of this particular hotspot,” Abbott said.

The Governor also said State officials have prepared for possible expansions of the coronavirus in coming weeks, but added that it should not be a surprise if a second spike in positive COVID-19 cases is reported later this week in Amarillo due to increased testing.

"I would be surprised if we didn't see a second spike,” Abbott said.

As of this writing, officials have reported 2,921 cases of COVID-19 across Potter and Randall Counties, with The New York Times ranking Amarillo as the city with the fourth highest number of new cases in the country, behind Gallup, New Mexico, Sioux City, Iowa, and Show Low, Arizona.
