The City of Amarillo also released the following statement about the new coronavirus numbers:

Due to a significant increase in testing volume for COVID-19 recently conducted by the state of Texas, there is an increase in the number of positive COVID-19 tests reported in today’s (Friday, May 15) Amarillo Public Health Department (APHD) COVID-19 Report Card.

The APHD COVID-19 Report Card for Friday (May 15) includes a large number of recent test results conducted by the Texas National Guard.

“We have seen over the past few days a significant increase in testing due to a partnership between the state of Texas, the city and our local Tyson plant,” said Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson. “We are grateful for the additional testing resources from the state and the cooperation from Tyson and its employees.”

“We are aware that additional testing will increase Amarillo’s positive numbers – this was expected. What additional testing provides is information needed to help slow the transmission of this illness in our community. This information is vital as we continue to move forward in responding to this illness.”

Since testing began under the APHD, 12,313 tests have been conducted. There are 1,765 active positive tests in Potter County and 450 active positive tests in Randall County.

The state of Texas has administered 3,587 tests, but not all test results are complete. These tests will be added in the coming days.
