Former President Donald Trump has endorsed one of State Sen. Kel Seliger’s (R-Amarillo) primary challengers ahead of the 2022 election cycle.
In a statement released on Tuesday night, Trump announced his endorsement of businessman Kevin Sparks for Texas Senate in District 31. Sparks, an oil and gas businessman, is one of two primary challengers who have announced campaigns challenging Seliger next year.
“Kevin Sparks of the Great State of Texas is running against RINO Texas Senator Kel Seliger, who is not helpful to our great MAGA Movement and, in fact, seems like the Texas version of Mitt Romney (and that is not good!),” Trump said in a statement posted to his website. “Kevin is a businessman, loves the people of Midland and West Texas, must WIN in order to protect our Oil and Gas Workers, defend our Southern Border, our Military and our Vets, and fight for our America First policies. Kevin Sparks has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Trump’s endorsement for Sparks came just a day after Seliger publicly attacked Sparks on the Texas Senate floor during a debate over redistricting. Seliger, who was the only Republican to vote against the redistricting map proposed by the Texas Legislature this year, has claimed that the changes made by legislators to his district’s boundaries have been made to boost Sparks’ campaign.
Thus far, Seliger has not stated whether he will seek re-election to the Texas Senate in 2022. In 2018, Seliger was re-elected narrowly in his Republican primary against former Midland Mayor Mike Canon and former Muleshoe Mayor Victor Leal. In that campaign, Seliger faced questions over a past social media post he had “liked” stating that Trump had a “dangerous unfitness” to the president, although a spokesman for Seliger later claimed that he has unknowingly “liked” the tweet.
Sparks and Coahoma ISD Trustee Stormy Bradley have both announced campaigns for Seliger’s seat in 2022. As of the right now, primary filing is set to begin in this race in November.
