APD Provides Update on North Hughes Homicide Investigation

Provided

Amarillo Police have provided an update on an investigation into a suspected homicide that occurred in November at Northwest 13th Avenue and North Hughes Street.

On November 20, officers were dispatched to Northwest 13th and Hughes on the report of a person lying in the roadway. Emergency personnel located a deceased male, later identified as Dwight Royal, Jr., 33, face-down in the road. He was found to have a gunshot wound to the upper torso. The finding was investigated as a homicide by APD.

In an updated released on Friday, officers announced that while Royal, Jr.’s death was thought to be a homicide, officers came to the determination that Royal accidentally discharged the weapon, which led to his death. The determination was made following officers speaking with witnesses and reviewing video and forensic evidence.
